two long weeks..

Sorry about the delay in posts. Axel and I had a terrible stomach virus with lots of vomiting (and diarrhea for him). I am pretty sure he is nearly 100% recovered. I am almost there, but am still extremely tired and still having trouble consuming food. Besides being sick Axel has become a little more picky and fussy at times. When I am not around he appears to be much better behaved. With me he is crying and whining for me to pick him up, hold him or do something. With that said, he hasn't been much of a walker since he came down with the stomach bug. He was doing great with the short independent walking of up to 30 seconds, but not in the past week. His sleeping seems to be changing quite quickly. He is taking longer naps. Anywhere from 1 hour to 2.5 hours. Some days he takes two naps, while other days just one long nap. He seems to only want to sleep 10-11 hours at night, rather than the 12-14 hours that he use to like to do. Axel is becoming more verbal and consistently using the appropriate word for some objects. He says daddy/dadda/dad, ball, dog, water/aqua, banana (nana for all food), mama (at times) and book. He is also starting to copy what we say. He said Touis after I continued to say Touis a few days ago. I was quite shocked, but more excited then anything. It is really cool to see him start to communicate. At times he even says what he wants instead of crying/screaming. This is pretty consistent with food and water, but not as consistent with other things. He has officially entered the screaming phase and doesn't really cry anymore, but rather screams at the top of his lungs. It has been quite the adjustment for us because it is hard to let him "cry it out" when he is screaming. Luckily, he usually stops in 5-10 minutes, although in the middle of the night he can cry off an on for up to two hours. We are not quite sure why he is crying, but we hope it stops soon. He will sleep for 20 minutes then cry for 10 and do this off an on. It usually happens when he wakes at 2 or 3am for a sippy cup of milk. Luckily this only happens 2-3 times per week. The rest of the week he is getting up around 9pm or sleeping straight through the night (1-2x/week).

When Axel does sleep through the night he likes to wake at 5:30am. It was tough on me last week when I wasn't feeling well to get up so early, but it is nice to have him sleep 11 hours straight. Last week was the first time Axel did that 3 nights in a row. Yeah for us!

Axel is starting to eat more "real meals". He had his first almond butter sandwich. It took him nearly 2 hours to eat, but he did finish it. You can see how excited he was. He loves to do anything that we do or that the dogs do. Speaking of dogs you can see Axel copying Louis with the sock in his mouth. Other new things are that we think he may have developed a soy sensitivity. We are almost done with the two weeks of no soy. Instead he is having goats milk or rice milk. The allergist is worried that he won't get enough protein with just rice milk so we are using a super expensive formula a couple of times per day mixed in with the rice milk. Keith and I can't wait until he is really eating "grown up" foods including meat. Axel does seem to eat whatever we give him, especially if we are eating it, but meat of any kind can be hit or miss depending on the day. Axel absolutely loves to read and play with books. He can spend up to thirty minutes flipping the pages and looking at the pictures. Axel has become quite the funny guy and started a funny laugh. If you listen closely you can hear it in the video below.

Other highlights over the past two weeks are that Gramma Susan came to visit for a day and Keith and I bought a house! Gramma had a great time trying to keep up with Axel. You can see here how happy Axel was to have her for a playmate for the day :) As far as the house goes, Keith and I couldn't be happier. We have been looking for a couple of years online and Axel and I started touring homes a couple of months ago. After 4 offers we finally got one that was accepted. We can't believe we will be moving in a couple of months to a HUGE 4 bedroom, 2.5 bath home in Saratoga! We are so very blessed and are looking forward to having people over. More room for our barbecues! Ok, I think that is it for now. Have a great week!

Axel Walks!!!!

I know I just posted, but I couldn't wait until next week to share the news. This afternoon we spent the day in Santa Cruz with Auntie Shannon and Ryan watching some of my teammates race one of my favorite races. When we arrived home we thought Axel would be really tired and cranky, but boy were we wrong. Axel was ready to continue to play outside and when we came in to wind down for the day Axel decided it was time he start walking. Yes that is right! After months of walking holding onto our hands and cruising walls and furniture Axel can finally walk!

Here are a couple of cute videos of his first few trips around the house. You can tell mommy and daddy are still nervous about him hitting his head on our hard wooden furniture and floors, but we can't help that we are first time parents :). Oh, and Axel's top left front tooth decided to make its full entrance today as well! What a four day weekend for me, 2 teeth and walking all in one weekend. The greatest thing about it, is that both of us were home to witness the great moment!!! Have a great week!

Crazy little Axel

First I have to start off and say that I was wrong about Axel's tooth. On Monday I could fully see and feel Axel's right upper tooth and the left upper tooth that I thought beat the right side is still just one little pointed edge one week later. Sunday night the right upper tooth fully cut through even though I couldn't feel any sharp edges on Sunday morning. Anyways, Axel has been a fun and crazy little terror these days. He is climbing on, through or in anything and everything he possibly can. It doesn't matter if it is the dog, a bench, a step, the doggy door, a pile of clothes or daddy, Axel wants to be on top of it. It is cute, but at the same time I now feel like I can't take my eyes of him, and I was just getting comfortable leaving him for a minute or two unattended. Looks like it is back to picking him up and bringing him into the bathroom or kitchen to play!

Speaking of doggies. Axel continues to love them. So much so I am starting to wonder if he thinks he is a dog. He has been trying to put the doggy collar and leash on for days now. He also learned how to bark and continues to try to climb through the doggy door.

On an even funnier note it appears that eating correlates to an itchy scalp and not a meal goes by without some of it ending up in his hair. Axel continues to do well with using the spoon for about 5 total mouthfuls before he decides to play bang and fling the food as well as dunk the hand and splash the yogurt!
The weather here in sunny California has not been so sunny. It appears we are truly getting April showers for the first time since I have moved back here. Luckily for Axel he is almost big enough for the rain jacket that Gramma Susan and Auntie Shannon got him.
With that said we finally had spring like weather this weekend and Axel got to wear a cute outfit his great Aunt June sent him as well as the sandals that daddy bought him. Sooo cute!

You can see how big he is getting......

Axel's Third Tooth!

Well with some delay Axel's third tooth finally broke through the gums. The ironic thing about it is its his top left front tooth, despite the fact that we have only seen it beneath the gums for 4 days, where we have seen the top right front for almost 3 weeks! Unfortunately, I do not have any pictures because I just noticed it this afternoon.

Axel has been exceptionally cranky the past few days as he woke with a cold on Thursday. We were thinking he was suffering from allergies, but with the congestion, cough and diarrhea we are pretty sure it is another virus!

The only thing I can say about the last week is Axel continues to grow more hair and look more and more like a little boy. His personality is also growing and appears to be leaps and bounds beyond his physical stature. He cries when he doesn't get his way...he laughs exceptionally loud at peak a boo of any kind...and smiles from ear to ear nearly all the time when he is not crying :). He appears to have his fathers animation, which puts a big smile on mommy's face.

Today Axel went from crawling to "W" sitting unassisted. Axel also walked 15 steps independently and stood for 1 minute unassisted. Its amazing he was able to squeeze in all of the happy fun time in between the crying he did the rest of the day. I was so desperate earlier today I broke down and let him play in the doggy bowls. He completely soaked himself and the floor, but the 15 minutes of happy Axel was sure nice!

Oh, before I go I wanted to thank Dad and Sonia for the gift towards a bed frame. After 1.5 years we finally bought one! Keith and I feel like royalty as we went from nearly floor level to a bed we have to climb up on!
Have a great week.....

Axel's 1st Birthday Party

It was the day before Axel's birthday party and all through the house not a creature was playing, not even the dogs......so daddy and mommy decided to let little Axel open his big gift..... As you can see Axel lit up with glee!

Twelve hours later went by awfully fast, so mommy and daddy scurried to set up the party. Mommy's creative juices fell short of nice, no dairy vanilla cake with strawberries and ice!

Happy Easter! The Szolusha's are having a relaxed day today as we spent time with family yesterday for Axel's birthday party. Here is a group shot of our little gathering.

Everyone had a great time! Daddy did a great job of making fun games that everyone fully enjoyed.

Mommy made her first non diary, organic cake which turned out okay. We discovered after refrigerating it (after the party) that it tasted much better! Sorry guys....I know now for next time.....thanks GG for the suggestion :) You can see here how much Axel liked it.....or not :)

Here is Axel looking so cool in his new Hawaii outfit gramma and grampa bought him. Axel had fun taking pictures with gramma, Auntie and GG.

Axel had lots of fun opening all of his wonderful gifts.

Daddy bought Axel his favorite toy growing up hoping that Axel will love his sock monkey just as much as he did!

Thank you everyone for all of the wonderful gifts. Axel loves them all. Now mommy and daddy just have to figure out which ones to let him play with first!

And congrats to you, little Axel, for completing your first year. Hopefully you will cherish all of the memories stored in this book. Mommy and daddy love you more than words can say!

Axel is 1 year old!

It is hard to believe, but at 5:59pm yesterday Axel turned 1 year old! It is truly amazing how fast time has gone and how much our little baby is turning into a little boy! Axel continues to play more and more and so far all of the lovely gifts family has sent he loves. We are having a little party for him on Saturday so he hasn't opened all of his gifts. Make sure to check back on Sunday for another post of his party.

Last night Axel did get to play with some new bath toys that Gramma Goodrow sent. He loves them!

He also loves the garbage truck that Aunt Josie and family sent.

We had Axel's one year check up this morning. He weighed in at 18lbs and 11oz, which is the 4th percentile and 29 inches, which is the 26th percentile. We lucked out and skipped immunizations this morning because Axel has a little stomach virus.

We discovered yesterday that Axel is allergic to avocados. Now that his skin is pretty clear with the hydrocortisone and aquaphor regimen it is easier to tell when he breaks out from a food allergy. No wonder why he hasn't been too crazy about avocados. It is amazing how brilliant kids are and I think I should listen to Axel's instincts a little more instead of trying to disguise the food by mixing it with some of his favorite foods.

Axel just finished getting professional photos. Unfortunately, I won't have those until the 14th of April, although I might be able to copy a photo from the online viewing once it posts in a couple of days. I will make sure to include those on my post on Sunday.

Oh, have a great weekend!

Axel's first Truck and more!

Axel has had a great week of growth and discoveries! He is understanding more and becoming more playful. With Axel turning 1 in just a few days we are busily preparing for his first birthday party. Keith is wrapping birthday presents as I write this blog. We are so excited that we actually bought Axel his first gifts. It was hard to not buy Axel any Christmas gifts, so we went a little over board with the birthday gifts. I can't say until our next post what Axel's gifts are, but I am sure we will have pictures after his birthday party next Saturday.

Gifts from Gramma and Granpa Burgess and Great Gramma and Granpa Eick have already arrived. We are wrapping those gifts as well, but silly mommy decided to open the boxes in front of little Axel. Not realizing that the gifts weren't wrapped resulted in Axel playing with his first truck a week before his birthday. I couldn't hide the truck after seeing Axel's eyes light up with excitement. Luckily I was able to grab the camera and catch his excitement on film, hence the picture above. I was going to include a video as well, but I have a couple of other videos I wanted to include instead.

Axel continues to make gains physically. He is walking better needing less assistance. He is also starting to get more confident and is practicing letting go and taking short distances solo. He still gets frustrated and cries at times, but Keith and I are trying to be a little more tough on him by helping him figure it out without intervening. I still help out too much, but I am learning :) With that said Axel started crawling sometimes. Typically, it is only if he wants to stand up right away, but occasionally like in this short video below he will crawl to his destination and then flop on his belly.

It appears that Axel is getting his first top tooth, but we are not 100% sure when it will make its final debut. We will see the white gums and then it will retreat for a day and then we will see it again. You can kind of see in the picture below his right upper gums sticking out below his lips.
Axel also started wearing 12 month clothing. It's a bit big, but I didn't want the winter/spring 12 month clothing to go to waste :) Here is his first cute outfit that we received from Keith's Aunt. Oh, sooo cute. Thanks Aunt June! Please ignore our dirty floors. I only clean them once a week :)
Keith and I also finally decided to give Axel's room some character. Axel has been in his own room since 6 months old, but we weren't sure when we would be moving so we didn't do a thing! Since Axel has become quite aware of his surroundings I thought it was time to give the poor child something to look at. So here it is......its a start!
With presents come boxes and now that Axel is older he loves to play with and in boxes. You can see how much fun he was having.

This morning I was able to get out on a ride with some of my teammates. When I got home Axel was wearing the outfit in the video below....Keith wanted to ensure me that we could change his pants if we went anywhere in case I wanted Axel to look "cute". I think the video is hilarious. It is a little long and slow at first, but if you have time to watch the entire minute and a half you can see why my heart swells with love for this little Angel of mine.

Axel and I are going for his one year checkup and his first "professional" pictures on Thursday so check back in for his new stats and pictures!

Last, I leave you with this picture.....where Axel is saying....I am ohhhh soooo bigggg......and cute :)
