Happy Halloween and more sports updates!

Axel had his Homecoming dance on Saturday October 18th. He had spirit week leading up to the dance and was involved in the spirit dance. He practiced for weeks and there class ended up winning the spirit week points. He waited until a couple of days before the dance to decide to go. He went prepared this year in sneakers to prevent any extra stress to his legs considering his tibial stress fracture that started about this time last year. Unfortunately, he does not have any pictures to share, although, I emailed a couple of his friends (who are girls) to see if they have any to share of Homecoming or Halloween. After the dance, Keith took him and a few friends to In-N-Out. A group of almost 10 hung out there for an hour and then everyone headed home.
We found out that Phoenix earned a top 10 in the United States time as an 11 year old last year for the 1650 with a time of 19:09.72. Her coach received this from USA swimming to give to her. This is definitely frame worthy.
The week of Oct. 20th Harker Middle school class trips were in full swing. Phoenix did not attend and was able to stay home for the week while her classmates drove for hours each day visiting a couple of our national parks. Phoenix, on the other hand, decompressed with drawing and reading, two of her favorite things. Here are just a few of the many drawings/ art work that she did.

She had a bunch of other drawings/art work, but they are unfinished or not "good enough" to share, according to Phoenix.
The kids attended the Gilroy Gators Spooktacular swim meet on October 25th and 26th. They swam really well and had some great drops. On Saturday I was solo with the kids, as Keith went to soccer to coach the team, even though Rubix decided to skip the game for the swim meet. Keith arrived half way through the meet.

Phoenix started off the meet with the 100 Fly, an invite that she typically doesn't prefer, but one that we thought she needs to work on to get better at. She did this event during the MAC meet and dropped 2 seconds to a 107+ and, remarkably, she dropped another 2 seconds achieving a 105.32 which is the 11-12 Far Western time and just a half a second from the 104.79 she needs for the 13 year old Age group cut. I am so happy of her for working on her weaknesses and trying really hard!

Rubix had an incredible 100 yard breast stroke, racing against his teammate Albert. Both boys had a big drop and achieved a 120 time with Rubix a 120.94 and Albert a 120.30.

After watching Rubix's incredible race, I was absolutely blown away watching Phoenix race the 200 breast. She did this event right after she turned 11 and has not done it since in short course (after racing this in long course when she was sick and adding half a minute). I thought it was time for her to try again because working on your weaknesses only makes you stronger physically and emotionally. Well, she went out so hard that she PR'd in her 50 (35 second) and in her 100 (1:15) and was able to keep the high tempo and pace to finish with a 2:36.06 catapulting her from a couple thousand in the nation to 46th in the nation and top 5 in PAC swim and just under 8 seconds from sectionals! The parents and coaches who watched were in amazement. It is rare to drop 18+ seconds in a 200 yard event, but Phoenix pulled it off with elegance!

Rubix swam the 100 IM and 50 back in just about the same time he has in the past, so I decided not to post them.

Phoenix finally dropped below 58 seconds in the 100 Free finishing strong amongst her teammates.

On Sunday, I had my 4th session as an official apprentice which meant I was making the calls and being evaluated for my readiness to become a full fledged stroke and turn official. Keith was very cute and wanted to take a picture of me before the meet started.

Here I am with my evaluator. I worked with her for the entire 5 hours and luckily she agreed I was ready, along with the meet director, Meta. Unfortunately, when I am working the meet I don't always get to see the kids swim or video their events. I worked the boys side, so I was able to see Rubix have an incredible 100 yard back swim racing his buddy Albert, but Keith did not film it. Rubix and Albert went 107.99 and 107.14 taking the 12th and 6th spot, respectively, in the country for all 10 and under boys. Absolutely, blazing fast! I also do not have his 50 yard fly which was a drop to 30.22, still shy of his goal of breaking the 30 second barrier.

I did get lucky and I was able to watch Phoenix swim the 100 back during one of my breaks. She had a good swim dropping to 102.98 just a quarter of a second from the 102.69 she needs for a AAAA time and still 3+ seconds from her ultimate goal of sectionals at a 59.49.

I was also lucky to catch Rubix's 50 breast on my second break. He swam really well despite a slow start and was just fraction of a second (.19) from AAAA time with a 36.58.

I missed Phoenix's 100 breast altogether, but Keith was kind enough to film it for me. She by far out swam herself finishing in a 113.68, which is a AAA time. To give you an idea of how well she did in her breast stroke "off events", she is now considering doing the 200 breast stroke at Age group champs in Dec.

On Wednesday, October 29th Rubix had his first basketball game! I was unable to attend live, but I was able to watch it via "live stream" at 5pm. I made it to Phoenix's swim practice, just in time to pull up the game. I had come from Axel's cross country meet he had at Bayland's Park. It was his second WBAL league meet. The varsity boys ran at 4pm. I was lucky enough to leave work in time to arrive at 3:45 pm to see him race and then make it to the pool in time to watch Rubix play and then Phoenix swim after his game was done. What more can a mom ask for, but to somehow be apart of each of her kids events. Keith was able to attend Axel's meet and then drive to the school in time to watch Rubix "live". They finished the game just in time to get Rubix to swim practice! What a day..... now onto Axel's race.

Unfortunately, but fortunately, Axel came down with a cold on the Friday before his meet (October 24th). He actually did not run on Friday or Sunday and his run on Saturday was only 2 miles because he was too achy and not well enough. He was able to do a 5 mile easy run on Monday and do a fairly good pre-race warm up on Tuesday. Keith and I were both not expecting him to feel very good or race his best, but despite the circumstances, I thought he still raced well. He even dropped 13 seconds from his time last year, but was likely 20-30+ seconds off what he is capable of if he were healthy.

The meet was surprisingly small with roughly 50 runners with maybe 7 or 8 schools attending from his League which has 14 schools in total.

Here is the pack start.
Axel about a half a mile in.

Axel at a mile. The end of lap 1

Axel at a mile and a half.
Axel going into mile 2 and the rollers
Axel going into the last 800 meters.
Axel finishing the 3.1 mile race course.
Axel actually took off right at the end because he hit the "brown zone" and starting loosing his bowels. His pain face was holding back his abdominal/ intestinal cramping. He told me before the race that lunch wasn't very good and that he would see how his stomach was during the race. I was so impressed with his ability to run through that and finish at 16:32.29, 5th place, from last years 16.45.50 and 8th place.  He has his league championship this Friday. Keith will be able to attend. I will be driving to Folsom for the swim meet with P and R and will miss it, but we are excited and hopeful he is feeling better and will continue to feel better going into CCS the following weekend.

As I might have mentioned, Axel came down with the cold on Friday and Phoenix on Monday and Rubix Monday/Tuesday. He had to leave practice on Wednesday and we make him stay home from school on Thursday to rest. This actually allowed Rubix and I to finish his costume, carve a pumpkin and hang out on Thursday afternoon/evening. It was a really nice treat!

I made him pick out the Steph Curry outfit that he planned on wearing. He really disliked the leggings Steph wears and hence his expression of, "I don't want to wear them!"

Despite him not liking the compression leggings, he liked his final Steph Curry basketball card. Phoenix did most of this project. She did the cutting out and taping/ words, etc. Axel put it together and added the straps. I did the finishing touches of securing the outside with more white duct tape, finding the basketball and making sure he had clothes to wear that were appropriate for his costume.
I had purchased two pumpkins, one for P and one for R to carve, but one of the pumpkins rotted within a couple of days and we had to throw it out. Phoenix didn't want to carve a pumpkin anyway, but she did help Rubix find an idea on Pinterest.
Here we are carving out his "little alien".
Finished product, showered and ready for bed!

On Friday morning I went for a doctor's appointment and found out as I was walking out that Axel's friend Irvy was sick and no longer able to host the Halloween party. I ended up changing my plans and headed to Costco to purchase food for Axel and his friends. I then rushed home and squeezed in a run before heading to the lower school where I volunteered for Rubix's Halloween party.

                                                    Craft time!

                                                                        Mochi donut time!
                                                    Wind up toy races!
                                The traditional Halloween parade!
Leaving school ready to head to swim practice with Daddy, who was able to make it to the parade this year!
I waited for Phoenix to arrive home from the bus. Her and Millie dressed up as pumpkins. I found these sweatshirts at Michael's. She also wanted to be a twin with me so I bought one too!
I happened to receive multiple compliments on my sweatshirt at Kaiser and the lower school, so money well spent to share this moment with my daughter!
Axel had a late start for school, hence why I received a phone call at 9 am telling me about the change in plans. I also did not get to see him dressed up, but he sent me this selfie based on my plead to have a picture for the blog and the scrap book. I have no idea what or who he is suppose to be. He told me it is a character from a video game, but that is as much as I know.

I was able to clean the house, mostly, and set up the food and house for his friends. Axel threw the food in the oven and on the stove about 30 minutes before his friends arrived. Christine came at 5 pm just after he got home from practice and the rest of the crew came closer to 6 pm. I had to leave to take P to swim practice, but Keith got home just before 6 pm. Keith took Rubix and some of Axel's friends trick or treating. They were nice enough to join Rubix.

Here is Rubix with Jonathan, Cynthia and Ava. Lily, also joined them. The high schoolers were out for about 40 minutes and then went back to join the other half of the friend group for food and fun.

Rubix and Keith continued trick or treating for a bit. Here are a couple of more photos Keith captured.

Rubix's pumpkin lit up when Phoenix and I got home at 8:30pm.
Axel was nice enough to take a few photos. Here is one with most of the friend group. They all seemed to enjoy themselves. Our house was finally quiet by 10pm. I somehow still managed to get Rubix and Phoenix in bed by 9:15 pm because the next morning was the kick off for the Swim-a-Thon and Phoenix was swimming the mile.
Rubix had planned to swim the 500, but decided to skip it because he wasn't feeling 100% yet and he had a soccer game against a tough component. Rubix enjoyed the food and carnival games and came home with fun prices.
He couldn't wait to show me when Phoenix was done swimming. Phoenix had a fairly good race, after a bit of a debacle, finishing her mile in 18:42, which is the 13-14 year old Far Western cut. Rubix's team beat their best competitor in their soccer game with a 1-0 win and I was able to attend for the second time!
We are in Folsom this weekend and then Morgan Hill the following weekend. Axel has CCS on November 15th and then we have our pre-Thanksgiving Friendsgiving the following weekend and if all goes well we will be in Clovis at the state cross country meet right after Thanksgiving. Please check back after Thanksgiving for likely a big November update! Until then..... God bless you all!

Cross Country, swim and soccer....Fall is in the air!

Phoenix had her 2nd cross country meet at Crystal Springs on September 24th. She ran great, coming in 1st on her team and 8th overall with a time of 12.30.97. She went out at a good pace The start

and was able to pass a few girls on the hill

The Hill and continue to move up with a good sprint finish The Finish. It was exciting to see her run so well.

Here is a cute picture of her being goofy!

Her swim teammate Annabelle, who is in 6th grade got 2nd in the 6th grade girls race. Rubix and Annabelle had P.E. together one year and had a lot of fun playing together. Annabelle and Phoenix are becoming better friends now that she has joined the middle school. They actually no longer swim together since Phoenix moved up to Pre-Senior 3 with Coach Nikita in August, but Annabelle will likely move up in December or in April.
On Thursday, September 25th the 7th graders had their first school dance! It was combined with 8th graders, but this is the first year for 7th graders since last year they only had a 6th grade "social". Phoenix had fun dressing up.

She wanted a picture with her favorite person.....Axel before we headed to the dance! They luckily had a fall break day on Friday so she was able to sleep in until 8 am the next day.

We had to wake in time to meet Audrey in Palo Alto because Phoenix was hanging out with Audrey while Axel and I did the Stanford tour! Here Axel is next to the "community track".

The tour was a couple of hours around campus. We were able to see the school of Engineering, some of the housing options, one of 9 of their libraries and many other interesting parts of campus.
The church was absolutely beautiful. Apparently, there is a 7 year wait list if you would like to get married there and, of course, you have to be an alumni.

It was a great first tour and it helped set the stage for what Axel might be looking for. We are trying to help him make a list and plan a couple of trips for the Spring. It looks like Axel and I will go to Pasadena to check out Cal Tech during the Feb. break. We will likely do a day trip or an overnight. Keith will take Axel to Boston to see a few schools and say hello to family during Spring Break. Unfortunately, we all won't be able to go because Rubix and Phoenix have their big swim meet, Far Westerns the next week and they don't want to miss swim practice and besides, the tours might not be very entertaining for them just yet.

Rubix has been loving school. He is doing really well and has even taken to writing apparently. In science he learned coordinate art and on his own, decided to draw this picture applying his coordinate art skills. I love when the kids love to learn! He has actually received a 97 and 100% on his first two math tests!

Phoenix is also doing really well in school and has received a 91 and 99% on her first two math tests! She is trying to earn that A for her second ear piercing. The cool thing is, she is doing well in all of her classes and if Rubix and Phoenix keep it up they may both end up with straight A's (no A- or B+).

Phoenix and Rubix had their first full swim meet of the season at MAC September 27th and 28th. We ran into the Los Gatos Coach and thought this was a cute picture.

Phoenix even asked for a hug from Daddy-o!
The kids had a successful swim meet dropping in all of their races (except in Phoenix's 200 IM). They are trying to get used to short course yards again, where there is a lot more flip turns and under waters than the long course meter season.

Phoenix had her 3rd WBAL cross country meet at Bedwell Baylands Park on October 1st. Phoenix and her teammates warming up.

The girls at the start!

She PR'd from the first meet at Bedwell Baylands Park by 13 seconds finishing 8th overall in 9 minutes and 16 seconds, averaging a 6:49 pace. She was really happy with her improvement. I was not able to make it, but here are the videos that Keith was able to capture.

Rubix had free dress at school on Friday, October 3rd and wore the super cool warm up pants I purchased him on mega sale for $10 from Arena. He is embarrassed and didn't want me to take a picture of him, but I think he looks so cute!
Rubix has been playing with his classmates and a few other boys for 5 seasons now. This fall they are "The Fog", since they have gray uniforms. Here is a picture of the team and coaches. I was finally able to see a game on Oct. 4th. Every Saturday there has been a swim meet or cross country meet that I have had to attend with either Phoenix or Axel, but Oct. 4th, Phoenix only had swim practice, so I was able to drop her off and head to the game and a teammate of hers gave her a ride home.

Rubix was able to make one of the 2 goals. Here is his goal.

Rubix has quite the foot and he has learned to kick the ball really hard. He has made several goals this year. Here are a couple one of the moms posted on our WhatsApp Group.

On the evening of October 4th we had the Pacific Swim Award Ceremony and Dinner in Pleasant Hill. Rubix's relay was nominated for best relay of the year. He was on 3 of the 4 relays that were nominated. He should have also been nominated for top 3,10 and under boys because he had the 3rd most points during long course Age group champs and Far Westerns, but for some reason the number 5 boy was nominated over him. That is okay, because he likely would not have won the award over his buddy Robert Legg who won.
Here is Rubix with Anay. It is hard for me to believe that Anay is now 11 years old! Rubix and Anay have swam together since Rubix started on Santa Clara Swim Club. They are still buddies, despite Anay being in a different training group (Rubix gets to train with him 2x/week) and they swim in the same lane still.
The coolest thing about the Pac Awards night is the guest speaker which was Tori Huske!!!!! She is such a humble Olympian. We had so much fun meeting her!
Some of the Santa Clara boy swimmers.

Rubix receiving his award from Tori. Albert, Rubix, and Anay were their to receive the award. The 4th boy, Lucas was not there, but it was very exciting to have them win this year!

Here are all of the SCSC swimmers who were nominated for an award! Most of them were on relays and about half of the relays won!

Phoenix had her WBAL Final League XC meet on Monday October 6th. It was much warmer out than the previous meet, which made the race much more difficult for most of the girls. Phoenix was a trooper and managed to PR by a couple of seconds 12.28.59 and finished 10th overall.

On October 11th, Axel had the Serra Invitational at Crystal Springs again. This is the most Harker has ever raced at Crystal Springs in one year, but it has been helpful because he was absolutely flying last weekend. He too off over 25 seconds breaking the 16 minute barrier, finishing 20th in a huge field of 150 boys in the Championship Varsity race. His time of 15.59.2 would have been 2nd in the Varsity race, non championship race with 170 runners. He felt the big field and the high caliber of racers helped push him. He had a lot of fun "running" in a pack.

Axel had a fundraiser 2 mile race that is apparently a tradition that many schools do to get a national and local ranking amongst other teams heading into the state championship meet. They take the time of their top 5 runners to compare them amongst other cross country teams. The race is call Hoka Postals and their coach had the team raise money for Komen, a breast cancer organization. Axel had an incredible race after a long stressful day/week of school. He had his spirit dance and homecoming pep rally today on top of an AP bio test and English presentation. He has 2 tests tomorrow and had 2 earlier in the week before the AP Bio test. Axel has basically been non stop studying/ doing homework when he is not running! At any rate, you get the idea. If you have time to watch the 10 minute video, Axel took off more than 35 seconds from the Spring, finishing in 10:16. He did a 5:17 first mile and a 4:59 second mile. He lead the entire race and the two boys from Gunn High school who drafted the entire time, had an incredible last lap/kick dropping Axel before he could start his own kick. I was really proud of Aiden, his teammate for coming up and leading the race for a lap and for Michael, the Sophmore for staying on the first mile+. It was also cool to see Robinson coming back from his injury getting a sub 11, considering he has only been running for three weeks.

Axel has his homecoming dance on Saturday and this is our last weekend of "rest" before we get into more swim meets, soccer and cross country all together.

Oh, the big news for me is that my Union UNAC/UHCP went on strike starting this Tuesday, October 14th. This strike is apparently the biggest strike in U.S. history covering Hawaii, Southern CA, Northern CA, Oregon, etc. Our goal is to have some control over our schedules and staffing, along with a pay raise, of course.
I have surprisingly done well with the whole ordeal, not being a very outgoing political person. I have spent 9 hours so far and have a couple of more hours left to do my part on the picket line. I do hope to go back to work on Monday and that our Union and Kaiser can come up with an agreement now. Only time will tell. I do hope to post sometime after Halloween, before Thanksgiving, so please check back in a few weeks!
